At least for this week.

Sukey is tired of supervising

This is cake 4 of 5, the one with the squirrels:

Yes, those are squirrels, not foxes

The leaves are those gumdrop fruit slices, mashed flat and cut with cookie cutters. The squirrels are two pieces of caramel, one for the tail and one for the body. I staked them on half-toothpicks to make sure they wouldn’t fall over.

Really. Squirrels.

This cake is for a colleague who started a “Squirrels on Campus” group on flickr, and was shocked to find someone else at a different university started a rival group, “Campus Squirrels.” Squirrel schism!

The next cake is due Oct. 7, and I’ve just had a request for a cake in November. Negotiations have just started on that one–for most cakes I just get some kind of idea, like squirrels or baseball or strawberries, but I think this customer will want to nail the decorations down a little more securely, so to speak. So we’ll see.

Yay more cake. Woot.

  1. Those are adorable skwerls!!

  2. And, as always, fabulous cats.

    Skwerl cake!

    And disgruntled cats.
As long as you are putting other small mammals on top of cakes you will be ignored furiously.

  4. lurkertype says:

I sez to myself “Are those skwerls caramel?” and indeed they are. You sculpted them yourself?

Agree with lauo — the girls undoubtedly think you are traitorous by spending so much attention and time on mere twitchy rodents WHO ARE OUTSIDE TAUNTING US.

    Love both their fuzzy paws.

Your squirrel cake is adorable! I’ve never seen squirrels on a cake before, and I can’t imagine them any cuter than these.

    Fantastic floofy kitties.

It was a little disconcerting to see I’ve baked everything and then a photo of Sukey. I momentarily thought she was included in the baking storm. Fortunately, only squirrels were involved.

    Yummy, yummy caramel squirrels.

  7. Jaypo says:

I’ve never seen squirrels like that. I mean, on a cake. They’re more like skwerls.

Good luck on the cake to come! Usually the most challenging jobs are the ones where clients have set ideas but no imagination.

  8. Jaypo says:

I almost forgot!! The girls are so beautifully languid when it comes to cake. At least you don’t have to share.

I love how Sukey’s sent her bones to the cleaners in that picture. Sally begged for a drop of icing, which she’s never done before–she gave it a good lickin’ but didn’t finish it.

  9. The cake is amazing and the cats are super cute but I just have to ask…on the last picture where the cats are asleep near a bag of cat treats…did you set that bag there after they were asleep or can your cats be near a bag of those things without trying to grab the whole bag and run? Our cat, DG, cannot be trusted to be anywhere near one of those bags. He grabs them and runs and tries to open them by adding hundreds of little cat teeth holes. LOL.

    • pegoftilling says:

Go DG! whether it’s supreme confidence in their food-on-demand economy (they demand, I supply) or a complete lack of survival skills, the girls will ignore bags of treetz until I open them. Sally, the grey cat, will disgrace herself completely for Arby’s roast beef but Sukey doesn’t think much of human foods.

The skwerl cake is devilishly delish looking. Evil edible skwerls…
