Ravelry.com is kind of like facebook for knitters, plus a large pattern library and discussion groups. The groups are like the old usenet groups with topic threads–I’m on one called Lazy Stupid & Godless, which tends toward freewheeling conversations with sailorly language. Topics generally include OMG IRL HATE or OMG TMI OOZING or OMG MAI KNITTING LET ME SHOW YOU IT but just before I left for Boston someone posted OMG I FOUND A KITTEN IN THE SNOW AND TOOK IT TO THE VET–
The poor wee thing had been hit by a car and was blind and deaf, with brain damage and a fractured pelvis. The vet offered to euthanize it at no charge but the poster asked her to do what she could, so the kitten was put on steroids over the weekend. The poster asked the list to send the kitten mojo, so that became her name. Things didn’t look all that good on Monday–Mojo was moving, but would get stuck in the corners of her cage, and she was eating from a syringe but couldn’t feed herself.
The poster was steeling herself for the Bad Talk from the vet, but then…it looked like Mojo could see a little. And she could move around the cage a bit better. And she purred when cuddled. And she kept eating. It turned out that another knitter was actually an assistant at the vet office, so the list got twice-daily updates on Mojo’s condition. When she pooped the announcement was made in capital letters–systems functioning!
So now, after almost two weeks at the vet, Mojo’s vision is improving and she responds to her name. She can feed herself, apparently by throwing herself into her dish, and use the litterbox. She’ll probably always be a special-needs kitty, but she’s a tux-cat, so who knows what eccentricities she had already. Most importantly, she’s home with the poster, on her way to being Ruler of the House, as all cats should be.
