Pirate-Ninja Bag

Image

Two two two memes in one!

Materials:

US6 needles

Worsted weight yarn:
–black
–face color (use green and it could be a zombie-pirate-ninja purse: meme trifecta!)
–two colors for stripey shirt
–bandana color

Assorted buttons

At a gauge of five stitches per inch and six rows per inch, this pattern makes a bag that is eight inches wide, and nine inches tall, with eight inch straps. To adjust the size of the bag by changing the number of stitches, start with a total number of stitches that is divisible by four, then subtract two stitches when casting on each strap: for example, to make a bag that is 16 stitches wide, cast on six stitches for each strap, then add four stitches when joining the straps to the body.

Ninja side:

Strap one: Cast on 18 stitches with black yarn. Knit in stockinette stitch for 8 inches. Break yarn and put stitches on holder or spare needle.

Strap two: Cast on 18 stitches. Knit in stockinette stitch for 8 inches.

Ninja body: Right side: knit across needles, cast on two stitches. Knit on stitches from strap one. Wrong side: Knit front and back, purl to last stitch, KFB. You should have 20 stitches total.

Knit in stockinette stitch for 2 ½ or 2 ¾ inches. Break yarn and join face color. Knit in stockinette for 2 inches. Break yarn and return to black yarn. Knit in stockinette for 4 ½ inches.

Knit two rows to make a turning ridge.

Pirate side:

Still with the black yarn, knit in stockinette for 1 inch. Switch to stripey shirt yarn: knit in stripes for 3 ¼ inches. Switch to face color (bottom edge of the face blocks should line up when the purse is folded.) Knit in stockinette for 2 ½ inches. Break yarn and switch to bandana color. Knit in garter stitch for six rows (three garter ridges). Break yarn and return to black yarn. Knit in stockinette for 2 inches.

Strap three: Knit two stitches together, then knit the next 18 stitches, leaving the remaining stitches on a spare needle or yarn holder. Continue the strap in stockinette for 8 inches. Bind off.

Strap four: Cast off the first two stitches on the spare needle, knit to last two stitches, k2tog. Continue the strap in stockinette for 8 inches. Bind off.

Finishing: Weave in all ends. Add eyes and other features with buttons and other decorations. For a bandanna tie, knit a small strip of garter stitch in the bandanna color, tie the strip in a knot, and tack it to the side of the bag. The pirate earring as pictured is a brass washer. Fold bag at turning ridge and pin, lining up bottom of faces. Seam sides of bag and tops of straps.
